Guidance for Mariners Pursuing the Master 200 GRT Endorsement
Does Mariners Learning System offer a 200-Ton Master's captain's license?
At this time, we do not offer a course or exam for the Master 200 GRT (Gross Register Tons) license.
We currently provide online, Coast Guard–approved courses and exams for the OUPV/Six-Pack, and Master's up to 100 GRT.
Most mariners begin by earning their Master up to 100 GRT, for which we have the online course and exam. Once you hold your 100 Ton Master's license and accumulate the required sea service and tonnage experience, you may then apply to upgrade to the Master 200 GRT through the National Maritime Center.
Where can I find information about the 200-Ton Master's captain's license?
The best place to begin is the National Maritime Center (NMC). Their website provides the official Coast Guard checklists and requirements for the Master 200 GRT, which is a Deck Officer’s license.
For mariners pursuing the Master 200 GRT or higher, the NMC manages all:
Eligibility and sea service requirements
Tonnage calculations
Application forms
Medical and drug testing requirements
Exam information
💡TIP! When searching in the National Maritime Center's checklists, go to the Deck Officers tab, under National Officer Endorsements (licensed) for Deck, you are looking for either:
