Ensuring Smooth Exam Sessions with Mariners Learning System

This article will walk you through the key steps to ensure a trouble-free experience when using the LockDown Browser, as well as answer common questions about how it works.

Troubleshooting for the LockDown Browser

Before launching your exam, confirm the following:

1. Your Device Meets System Requirements

  • You must use an up-to-date laptop or desktop computer

  • Mobile devices are NOT supported, including:

    • Phones

    • Tablets (iPad, Android tablets)

    • Chromebooks

2. You Are on a Private Internet Connection

The LockDown Browser may not work on:

  • Public Wi-Fi

  • Work or school networks

  • Coffee shop or shared internet connections

A private, stable home internet connection helps reduce troubles.

3. Your Camera & Microphone Are Working

  • Confirm both are enabled and functioning

  • Ensure you have adequate lighting so your camera can clearly capture your face

4. You Are Using a Supported Browser

Use an up-to-date version of one of the following:

  • Google Chrome (recommended)

  • Firefox

  • Safari

Other browsers - such as Edge, Internet Explorer, or Opera - often cause compatibility issues.

5. All Streaming & Background Software Is Closed

Programs and extensions such as:

  • Screen recorders

  • Streaming services

  • Video conferencing apps

…must be completely closed before launching the LockDown Browser.

💡 TIP! Before launching the LockDown Browser:

  1. Open your exam activity

  2. Click “Check your LockDown Browser Setup”

  3. Follow the on-screen prompts

  4. After confirming your system is ready, click “Launch LockDown Browser”

This helps prevent issues before they occur.

Do I need to close the LockDown Browser after every quiz attempt that requires this software?

Yes. For each exam or module that requires the LockDown Browser:

  1. Click “Launch LockDown Browser” to start

  2. Complete and submit your quiz

  3. Close the browser completely

If your exam has multiple modules, you must launch, submit, and close the LockDown Browser for each module, including the Sample Test.

What is the LockDown Browser?

The LockDown Browser is secure testing software that allows students to take required Mariners Learning System exams without an in-person proctor, giving you the flexibility to complete exams anytime.

When you activated your course, you acknowledged that you have:

  • An up-to-date laptop or desktop

Refunds cannot be issued if your equipment or internet does not meet the required specifications, as these requirements are clearly stated before purchase and during activation.
