Captain's License Exam Results TimelineUpdated a month ago

Processing Time for Online Captain’s License Final Exams

When you complete a final exam for your Mariners Learning System online captain’s license course, your exam footage and materials must be reviewed by our Proctoring Team before results are released via email. Below is a detailed overview of how long this process takes and what can affect your grading timeline.

How long does it take to receive my exam results?

Once your exam attempt is fully submitted, results are typically processed within:

📅 3 - 5 Business Days

This review period begins only after all required exam components have been submitted (see details below).

During this time, our certified proctors:

  • Review your exam footage

  • Verify exam compliance

  • Confirm identity and testing conditions

  • Check for completeness and accuracy of all submitted materials

When the review is complete, you will receive an email notification with your exam results.

What if my exam attempt contains multiple modules?

Some final exams are divided into multiple modules.

For example:

  • The 1st attempt of the OUPV/Six-Pack exam contains four modules

  • The 1st attempt of the Deck License Renewal exam contains two modules

➡ ALL modules in your exam attempt must be submitted before grading can begin.

Our Proctoring Team cannot start the review process until every module for that attempt has been completed and submitted.

If one or more modules have not been submitted yet:

  • The review process will not start, and

  • Your grading timeline will be delayed

This process ensures your full exam attempt is evaluated as a complete unit and graded accurately.

What if a module of my final exam included an exam test packet?

Some final exam modules, such as the Chart Plotting module in the OUPV/Six-Pack final exam, require a physical test packet. Included in your original shipment was the Chart Plotting Final Proctored Exam Official Test Packet for your 1st attempt at the Chart Plotting final proctored exam. KEEP IT IN A SAFE LOCATION!

Once you take your final exam, this packet must be returned to us before grading can begin.

How to Return Your Test Packet

After submitting the Chart Plotting module online:

  1. Place the completed test packet in the mail as soon as possible

  2. Use the prepaid return label included with your shipment

  3. Drop it in a USPS mailbox or at your local post office

Returning it promptly helps ensure your exam results are processed without delay.

⭐ Pro Tip: Before mailing the packet, snap a quick photo of the tracking label with your phone. This allows you to track the shipment’s progress for your own records.

Move on to any remaining modules of that testing attempt, as grading will NOT begin until we get your testing packet back to headquarters AND all modules within that exam attempt are submitted.

How long will it take for my testing packet to get returned to Mariners Learning System?

Shipping times can vary depending on your location. To estimate how long it will take for your testing packet to reach Mariners Learning System, you can use the USPS Priority Mail Delivery Map.

How to Check Your Estimated Delivery Time:

  1. Visit the USPS Priority Mail Delivery Map online

  2. Enter the ZIP code you are mailing from

  3. The map will display the expected delivery timeframe to New Jersey

Important Notes:

  • Delivery times are estimates only

  • Exceptions may apply based on weather, volume, or postal delays

  • USPS does not guarantee delivery dates for Priority Mail

Using this tool can give you a general idea of when your packet may arrive, helping you better anticipate when your exam review timeline will begin.

When does the exam results timeline start?

The grading timeline begins only when ALL of the following are completed:

✔ All exam modules for that attempt are submitted
✔ (If applicable) The test packet has been returned and received
✔ No additional student actions are pending

If any of these steps are still outstanding, the grading period will not begin.
